National Gallery of Australia Acquires Paul Gauguin Painting for Nearly $10 Million

Canberra, August 1, 2024 – The National Gallery of Australia has made a significant addition to its collection by acquiring “The Blue Roof, or Farm at Le Pouldu,” a painting by the French post-impressionist artist Paul Gauguin, for $9.8 million. This acquisition marks the first time a painting by Gauguin has entered a public collection in Australia.

The artwork, depicting a green field with farmhouses—three with red roofs and one with a blue roof—was unveiled as part of the gallery’s major exhibition of Gauguin’s work, which began in June. This exhibition is the first comprehensive showcase of Gauguin’s globally renowned paintings in Australia.

The National Gallery’s acquisition of “The Blue Roof” underscores its commitment to enriching its collection with significant works of art. Once the current Gauguin exhibition concludes in October, the painting will be included in the gallery’s permanent collection displays.

This move not only enhances the gallery’s offerings but also provides Australian audiences with the unique opportunity to experience Gauguin’s artistry firsthand.
