Denise Di Novi, renowned for her work as a producer on films such as “Heathers,” “Edward Scissorhands,” and “Beaches,” has embraced a new chapter in her life as an abstract expressionist painter. The transition from Hollywood to the art world began in early 2020, following the tragic loss of her husband, Scott Farrow.
Di Novi, whose impressive career includes producing five Tim Burton films, five Nicholas Sparks adaptations, and two versions of “Little Women,” found solace in painting during a period of profound grief. The sudden death of Farrow, her husband of five years, left her in deep mourning. Compounding her sorrow, the COVID-19 pandemic began shortly thereafter, plunging the world into uncertainty and isolation.
In the midst of the pandemic, Di Novi sought a creative outlet to process her emotions. “I was trying to keep my brain from exploding, and drawing provided a connection to something beyond the panic and shock,” Di Novi reflects. “It felt necessary—an outlet for both my love for my husband and my grief.”
Now, Di Novi’s paintings, characterized by vibrant abstracts of blues and greens, are featured in a new gallery show at the Honarkar Foundation in Laguna Beach. This exhibition represents not only a healing process for the artist but also a new direction in her life and career.
