Banksy, renowned as one of the most influential artists of the 21st century, is facing growing criticism and scrutiny. Recent incidents involving the removal of several of his animal-themed street artworks have sparked a debate about whether his celebrity now overshadows the political significance of his creations.
The controversy began shortly after a new Banksy mural featuring a provocative rhinoceros appeared at London’s Kew Bridge. The artwork was promptly defaced by another graffiti artist, who sprayed a white signature over the piece.
This incident is not an isolated event. Banksy’s works have frequently been targeted, with defacement and removal becoming so commonplace that they have warranted their own Wikipedia page, cataloging approximately 50 instances of his art being moved or erased.
