In Focus Asia: Artists Capture the Essence of the Continent

At Frieze Seoul, emerging artists are often placed prominently, elevating their work to new heights.

On a recent sweltering morning in Songhyeon, a gallery-rich area near Gyeongbokgung Palace, artist Park Kyung Ryul discussed her upcoming Frieze Seoul presentation.

During a coffee meeting at Baik Art gallery, Park, 45, shared her view that her artworks are not isolated pieces but part of a continuous expression. Her “sculpture paintings,” primarily oil on canvas, incorporate small items like Buddha figurines and flea market mirrors, integrating them into her artistic narrative.

“Sculpture painting treats all elements of painting as equals and considers the brushstroke as an object,” Park explained. “When displayed in an exhibition, the painting transforms into an object itself, akin to the sculptures and other elements I incorporate.”
