Restitution Firm Settles Legal Dispute Over Chagall Painting

A long-standing legal dispute involving a Marc Chagall painting has been resolved, according to the Art Newspaper.

The painting, Over Vitebsk (1913), which depicts an elderly man soaring above the Belarusian village of Vitebsk and is valued at $24 million, was returned by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York to the relatives of its original owner in 2021. The dispute centered on fees associated with the painting’s restitution.

MoMA’s recent expansion, designed by architect Yoshio Taniguchi and costing $425 million, features a glass facade that reflects the surrounding cityscape. The resolution of the legal claim regarding Over Vitebsk was confirmed earlier this year following a legal filing.
