The National Portrait Gallery has extended an offer to return a portrait of billionaire miner Gina Rinehart amidst ongoing disputes regarding the terms of its display, which have persisted for over five years.
In 2022, the gallery proposed to return the painting, created by West Australian artist Alix Korte, if Rinehart was dissatisfied with the gallery’s collecting parameters. Despite this offer, the gallery continues to hold the painting but has not yet secured legal ownership.
The ongoing issue highlights the complexities surrounding the artwork’s display and custodianship.
