Sydney Contemporary, now in its eighth edition, is set to feature 86 galleries and over 400 contemporary artists, presenting more than 1,000 works at Carriageworks over a four-day event. Among the standout pieces is a rare painting by the late Indigenous artist Emily Kame Kngwarreye, which is the highest-priced artwork at the event. This painting’s asking price could establish a new record for the most expensive painting ever sold by a female Australian artist, as well as the highest price achieved for a Kngwarreye artwork. Currently, Kngwarreye’s distinctive desert depictions hold the auction record at $2.1 million.
The exhibition also includes a giant inflatable gibbon by artist Lisa Roet, priced at $185,000. Art collectors can find Chuck Close prints available for $125,000 and a Pablo Picasso ceramic for $85,000. The most affordable items on display are $350 paper prints, offering a range of options for collectors.
