Seminal Monet Painting to Preview at Christie’s Shanghai Ahead of Hong Kong Auction

Claude Monet’s influential painting Nymphéas, created 125 years ago as the inaugural piece in his celebrated water-lily series, will be on display this weekend at Christie’s Shanghai Art Space. The work is set to be featured in the forthcoming Christie’s Hong Kong Auction.

Nymphéas, which remained in the Monet family for several decades, is one of the earliest works capturing Monet’s cherished water-lily pond at his Giverny home. This series, which comprises eight pioneering paintings, includes pieces housed in prestigious institutions such as the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Kagoshima City Museum of Art, and the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna in Rome.

The painting exemplifies a key innovation in Monet’s Nymphéas series: the removal of the horizon line. By focusing exclusively on the water’s surface, Monet immerses viewers in the dynamic interplay of water, light, and atmosphere, eliminating peripheral distractions and highlighting the pond’s ever-changing reflections.
