In Japan, only three artisans are recognized for their craftsmanship in painting murals that adorn the walls of sento, or public bathhouses. Among them, Tanaka Mizuki stands out as the youngest muralist specializing in this unique art form. Her journey into sento mural painting began during her school years, driven by a deep passion for this traditional craft. We interviewed Tanaka to explore her initial experiences with painting and her extensive training in this specialized field.
During our visit to Edogawa City in Tokyo, we encountered the nostalgic charm of Take-no-yu, a public bathhouse established in 1963. The establishment features a classic design, including high-ceilinged changing rooms and traditional baths, all complemented by its distinctive chimney and retro ambiance.
