ENMU Receives Art Donation from Acclaimed New Mexico Painter Ed Sandoval

Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU) has proudly accepted a donation of two paintings from renowned New Mexico artist Ed Sandoval. Among the artworks is “El Viejito,” translating to “the little old man” in Spanish, a beloved character that frequently appears in Sandoval’s work, symbolizing his deep connection to New Mexico.

“Mr. Sandoval is a truly gifted artist, and ENMU is honored to receive two exquisite examples of his work,” remarked James Johnston, ENMU Chancellor. “We are proud to have been a part of his educational journey. He is an outstanding alumnus and a valued member of our Greyhound family.”

The donated paintings will be showcased in the main lobby of the Jack Williamson Liberal Arts Building (JWLA). Bryan Hahn, manager of the Runnels Gallery and curator of the university’s art collection, stated, “We intend to display these paintings in high-traffic areas near the entrance of the JWLA. This location will ensure that a diverse audience, representing various disciplines and backgrounds, has the opportunity to appreciate Sandoval’s work.”

Ed Sandoval graduated from Eastern New Mexico University in 1970 with a Bachelor of Arts in Art Education. A native of Nambe, New Mexico, he is celebrated for his enchanting pictorial storytelling, which draws inspiration from the land and history of New Mexico. For over 30 years, he has operated the Ed Sandoval Gallery in Taos, New Mexico.
