Artist Commemorates One Year Since Sycamore Gap Tree Felling with Tribute on Tea Bags

In remembrance of the Sycamore Gap tree, which was felled a year ago, a nature-loving artist has created a series of paintings on used tea bags, depicting the iconic tree in various settings.

The beloved sycamore was cut down overnight between September 27 and 28, 2023, an act that provoked significant public outcry and sorrow. Caroline West, a 50-year-old artist from Waterlooville, Hampshire, expressed her devastation at the loss, inspiring her to honor the tree through her artwork, illustrating it across different seasons and times of day, including winter scenes and sunset backdrops.

West, whose artistic inspiration stems from her love for nature, remarked, “I just think trees are amazing, and they all have a story to tell. It was a really senseless thing to have happened.” She has been painting British landmarks on tea bags for some time and felt compelled to capture the essence of the Sycamore Gap tree, a source of inspiration for many artists and poets over the years.
