Koy Suntichotinun, known as Koy Sun, sought to make a meaningful impact through his art, leading him to apply for the Impact Artist Residency at Bread & Salt, a creative hub in Logan Heights featuring multiple galleries and artist studios.
To ensure his application stood out, Sun crafted a vintage suitcase adorned with retro sign-painting designs, rather than submitting a conventional portfolio on a flash drive. “I wanted to create something memorable to capture their attention,” Sun explained.
Inside the suitcase, he showcased a selection of his work, secured with a leather strap fashioned from an old belt. His portfolio featured photo collages that highlighted vibrant lettering on various storefronts, signs, and even a hot dog cart.
“I was concerned that my limited experience in fine art might not be enough to gain acceptance,” Sun admitted. “That’s why I made the video and the suitcase—to convey my commitment to producing more artwork in the future.” Through this creative approach, Sun hopes to inspire and engage his community with his artistic endeavors.
