Queen Elizabeth I Portrait Replaced by Paula Rego Paintings at 10 Downing Street

In a planned re-hanging, the portrait of Queen Elizabeth I by Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger has been removed from a meeting room at 10 Downing Street, the official residence of the UK Prime Minister.

According to reports from the Telegraph, two artworks by renowned Portuguese artist Paula Rego have taken the place of the iconic portraits of Queen Elizabeth I and Sir Walter Raleigh. The new displays feature works from Rego’s mural “Crivelli’s Garden” (1990–91) and are now showcased in a room designated for meetings between the Prime Minister and global leaders.

The portrait of Queen Elizabeth I, known as the Ditchley Portrait, dates back to approximately 1592 and was created by Flemish painter Gheeraerts. This particular artwork is noted for its association with the grander version that once adorned Ditchley House in Oxfordshire.
