Moriyuki Ochiai Unveils Colorful Maze of Discarded Paint Samples in Tokyo Showroom

In Tokyo, Moriyuki Ochiai Architects has transformed a showroom for a Japanese paint manufacturer into a vibrant display called the Color Maze, celebrating the versatility of paint. This dynamic space is crafted from discarded product samples, reimagined as visual elements that create a rhythmic interplay of colors and shapes, mirroring the changing seasons of Japan.

Inspired by the seasonal shifts, Ochiai’s design features colorful lines on the walls that reflect the Earth’s rotation. “Since the seasons are influenced by the tilt of the Earth’s axis, we painted lines of various colors at angles corresponding to this axis, rhythmically infusing the space with rainbow hues,” the design team explained.

At the heart of the showroom, a series of arches adorned with bundles of paint sample strips form a maze-like structure, inviting visitors into an immersive world of color. These arches, with their intricate patterns, encourage exploration, revealing new layers of color from different perspectives. The strategic positioning of the strips adds depth and movement, creating a dynamic interplay that contrasts or blends harmoniously depending on the viewer’s angle.
