A Must-Visit German Museum Filled with Old Master Paintings

The museum features over 700 masterpieces by renowned artists including Botticelli, Rubens, Titian, Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, and Hals.

A family trip to Munich often conjures images of schnitzel, castles, and beer festivals. However, my sister Katie and I prefer to veer off the beaten path—unless the path leads us to Old Master paintings. Our love for 500-year-old art, which connects us to the past, brought us to the Bavarian capital earlier this year.

As an art writer frequently engaging with curators, I learned that Munich’s Old Painting Museum boasts more than 700 masterpieces by some of the greatest artists in history, including Botticelli, Rubens, Titian, Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, and Hals. The prospect of exploring this treasure trove of artistic brilliance was irresistible, especially for two art enthusiasts like us who often experience FOMO (fear of missing out).
