Balmoral Beach Painting Expected to Fetch $80,000-$100,000 at Auction

A painting of Balmoral Beach, bought for $7,500 in 1991, is poised to achieve a remarkable sale price at an estate auction in Melbourne, where it is estimated to sell for between $80,000 and $100,000.

The artwork, titled Balmoral Beach, Sydney Harbour, is an undated piece by Ethel Carrick Fox, an artist known for capturing the beauty of one of Sydney’s most picturesque beaches throughout her career.

Born in England in 1872, Carrick Fox spent much of her life in France and Australia after marrying Impressionist artist Emanuelle Phillips Fox in 1905. The painting, an oil on canvas measuring 42 x 57.5 cm, will be auctioned at Gibson’s Australian and International Art Auctions.

It remains uncertain whether the Mosman Art Gallery will acquire this significant piece, which could complement an existing Carrick Fox artwork donated by Neil Barnavus AO. The pre-sale estimate for the painting ranges from $80,000 to $120,000.

Additionally, the National Gallery of Australia may be a potential buyer, as it prepares for a major retrospective of Carrick Fox’s work in Canberra starting December 7.

The painting is part of the collection of George Brugler and Jasmine Cowen, a Tasmanian couple known for their impressive art collection. A spokesperson for Gibson’s noted, “This extraordinary collection includes works by many renowned Australian artists such as Ethel Carrick Fox, Hilda Ricks, Max Meldrum, and Arthur Boyd, as well as notable European artists. It embodies the spirit of a true connoisseur of beauty and a deep appreciation for art history, reflecting the intersection of two curious minds.”
