Controversy Surrounds Ancient Rock Painting’s Animal Depiction

A rock painting has ignited debate regarding the identity of a mysterious animal, with one scholar suggesting it represents a 250-million-year-old tusked herbivore.

Julian Benoit, an associate professor at the University of the Witwatersrand’s Institute of Evolution, argues that the creature depicted in the Horned Snake Panel, located in the East Free State, is a dicynodont. This interpretation is reportedly influenced by a fossil discovered by the San people.
