Colorado State University Celebrates 100th Anniversary of Painting the Iconic ‘A’

On Sunday, August 18, 2024, Colorado State University (CSU) alumni and students gathered in Fort Collins, Colorado, to uphold a century-old tradition—the annual painting of the historic ‘A’. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the cherished ritual, which first began in 1924.

The event saw participants hiking up to the landmark, which overlooks the city, to give it a fresh coat of paint. This symbolic act has become an enduring connection between generations of CSU students and alumni, reflecting their shared pride and commitment to the university.

The ‘A’, originally painted by students in the early 20th century, has since become a powerful emblem of CSU’s heritage. Each year, the painting event serves not only as a way to maintain the physical appearance of the ‘A’, but also as a reminder of the strong ties that bind the CSU community together.

As the university celebrates this milestone, the tradition of painting the ‘A’ continues to stand as a testament to the lasting legacy and spirit of Colorado State University.
