Alex Katz Explores the Changing Seasons at MoMA

NEW YORK — Renowned artist Alex Katz is bringing a fresh perspective on the changing seasons to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) with his latest exhibition. Katz, known for his iconic depictions of faces and landscapes in his SoHo-based studio since the 1950s, is showcasing four new monumental paintings that capture the essence of seasonal transitions.

The exhibit features over 100 works created by Katz since 2022, reflecting his distinctive approach to painting. Katz often starts his creative process by photographing scenes with his iPhone, which he later sketches and transforms into large-scale, immersive paintings. His work is characterized by abstracted, gestural marks that evoke the sensation of viewing a landscape rather than depicting specific details like deciduous trees or lush greenery.

Katz describes his method as intuitive, completing each painting in a single morning session. “It’s the sensation of seeing,” Katz explained, emphasizing the fluidity and open-ended nature of his compositions. As the summer season moves towards fall, Katz’s “Seasons” exhibition will continue to be on display at MoMA through September 8, offering visitors a unique visual exploration of the changing times.
