Stolen 17th Century Portrait Returned After 45-Year Absence

Chatsworth House, DERBYSHIRE — A stolen 17th-century portrait of renowned Flemish artists Sir Peter Paul Rubens and Sir Anthony van Dyck has been returned to its original location after a 45-year odyssey.

The artwork was taken during a raid in 1989 while on loan to an art gallery in Eastbourne. Prior to its loan, the portrait was prominently displayed at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire.

The painting’s recovery began in earnest in 2020 when it was identified by a vigilant art historian at an auction in Toulon, France. Following its identification, a specialized team dedicated to recovering lost artworks has successfully facilitated its return to Chatsworth House.

The portrait’s return marks a significant achievement in the ongoing effort to recover stolen cultural heritage.
