The authentication of art rarely makes headlines, but it did last year when UK researchers suggested that the de Brécy Tondo, an anonymous painting from centuries past, may have been created by the Renaissance master Raphael. This bold assertion carries significant financial implications and has garnered widespread interest due to the cutting-edge technology used: AI.
Led by Christopher Brooke of the University of Nottingham and Hassan Ugail of the University of Bradford, the research team employed a facial recognition model to analyze the Madonna in the de Brécy Tondo, comparing it with other portraits of the same figure. The model identified a 97 percent match with Raphael’s Sistine Madonna altarpiece. As Ugail put it, “identical models were used for both paintings, confirming they are undoubtedly by the same artist.”
