Residents are being encouraged to dress as characters from an LS Lowry painting in an effort to recreate a historic scene he captured in 1938. The painting depicts Bridge Street in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, featuring both adults and children gathered at the base of the hill.
Lowry, renowned for his portrayal of working-class life in northern England’s industrial areas, frequently visited Berwick-upon-Tweed. An exhibition showcasing his work is currently on display at the Granary Gallery and will run until October.
The scene in question, which shows Bridge Street, has remained remarkably unchanged over the past eight decades. Jonathan Macfarlane, a local business owner, explained, “We thought this would be a wonderful way to celebrate the exhibition and honor Lowry’s strong connection with the town he cherished.”
Lowry, who passed away in 1976, maintained a regular presence in Northumberland throughout his life, reflecting his deep appreciation for the region.
