Mitchells Antiques & Fine Art will host a significant auction from September 11 to 13, featuring a diverse collection of over 1,750 lots. Highlights include a notable painting by LS Lowry, recognized for his iconic ‘matchstick’ figures, and a bust of esteemed fell runner Joss Naylor.
The auction will showcase 200 items from a private estate in North West Cumbria, alongside other notable pieces such as drawings by Alfred Wainwright, artworks by Sheila Fell and Percy Kelly, and an anti-nuclear leaflet design by Josefina de Vasconcellos.
One of the standout items is a painting that depicts Rockcliffe Church near Carlisle, where the artist GS Bennett served as minister. Measuring 39cm x 24cm, the painting features Lowry’s distinctive matchstick figures, including children playing and a dog, and bears the joint signature ‘GS Bennett and LS Lowry 1964’ in the bottom left corner. The piece is expected to fetch between £2,000 and £5,000, though James Moore, head of antiques & fine art, notes that its impeccable provenance might drive the price higher. A photograph of Lowry and Bennett examining the painting together adds to its historical significance and appeal.
The proceeds from this auction will benefit the Dean and Chapter of Carlisle Cathedral and The Geoffrey and Alice Bennett Bequest, which supports retired clergy.
