‘The Rose Aesthetic’ Showcases Artistic Duo at Bethel College

For the second consecutive year, Bethel College’s Regier Art Gallery is featuring a husband-and-wife artist duo as part of its opening exhibit for the school year. The exhibition, titled The Rose Aesthetic, showcases the paintings and drawings of Gwen and Victor Rose, renowned artists and educators based in Wichita.

The exhibit is currently on display at the Luyken Fine Arts Center and will run until September 19. The gallery is open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m. Admission is free.

An artist reception will be held on September 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the gallery, offering visitors a chance to meet the artists.

Both Gwen and Victor Rose hold degrees from Wichita State University—Gwen with a B.F.A. in painting and a master’s degree in art education, and Victor with both a B.F.A. and M.F.A. in drawing and painting. Gwen spent 30 years teaching art in the Derby school district and is affiliated with Gallery XII in Wichita. Victor has taught at various institutions including Wichita State University, Friends University, Newman University, and Butler Community College.

Gwen draws lifelong inspiration from the natural world and geometric patterns, often incorporating mathematical concepts such as the Fibonacci series, prime numbers, and tessellations into her work. “I enjoy taking paper and pencil outdoors to draw from nature, whether in my garden or while camping, or using photographs from these settings to spark new ideas,” she explained. Her process involves starting with realistic depictions of birds, flowers, and landscapes, which she then transforms into abstract representations of nature.

Victor’s artistic practice explores a variety of subjects, styles, materials, and techniques, with a focus on transforming his understanding of life and art. His work includes black-and-white prints initiated with ballpoint or felt-tip pen drawings, “buried pieces and appropriations” (artworks buried in garbage and later excavated), and picture plane abstractions.

The Rose Aesthetic promises a diverse and engaging display of creative expression, reflecting the unique approaches of both artists.
