The London Mural Festival has officially commenced, marking the start of a month-long celebration of street art across the city. Running throughout September, the festival spans 15 boroughs and features more than 100 new murals.
The inaugural mural of this year’s festival, titled A Lasting Place, is the work of artist Sebas Velasco. Located on Cobbett Street in Oval, South London, the mural draws its name from a song by British rapper Loyle Carner. The artwork depicts a young man against the backdrop of a Brixton train line at night.
Anna Ovni is among the artists contributing to the festival, currently painting a mural at the Leadenhall Building in the City of London. The festival’s first murals have already been completed in Oval, the City of London, and Camden.
Justine Simons, London’s Deputy Mayor for Culture and the Creative Industries, expressed her enthusiasm for the festival’s return. “I am delighted that the festival is back,” she said. “It is a wonderful example of how murals transform our city into a gallery, providing free art to everyone and contributing to a better city for all.”
Organized by Global Street Art, the festival has introduced an interactive map detailing the locations of the murals and the artists behind them. Dr. Lee Bofkin, CEO of Global Street Art, praised the festival’s impact. “The festival leaves a long-lasting visual legacy across the city,” he noted. “Most of the 75 murals from our inaugural edition four years ago still look fantastic, and we hope the 100 new murals we’re adding this year will have the same enduring quality.”
Dr. Bofkin also highlighted the dedication and creativity involved in the festival, stating, “The hard work, talent, and passion pouring out of this event are unmatched. It’s definitely worth a visit.”
Sebas Velasco, reflecting on his contribution to the festival, expressed his satisfaction with his first London mural. “The wall, like the neighborhood and the sitter, had so much character,” Velasco remarked. “I am grateful for the creative freedom and support from the team, which allowed me to fully explore this project.”
