South Korea Emerges as a Contemporary Art Hub with Major Events

South Korea has firmly established itself as a focal point for contemporary art with a series of high-profile events that unfolded last week. In Seoul, the 2024 editions of Frieze Seoul and Kiaf SEOUL, held from September 4-8 at the bustling Convention and Exhibition Center (COEX) in Gangnam, attracted significant attention. Meanwhile, the 15th Gwangju Biennale, running from September 7 to December 1, showcased innovative works at the Gwangju Biennale Exhibition Hall and other locations throughout the city.

As the art world’s spotlight shifted between New York’s The Armory Show and its related satellite events, Art & Object turned its gaze eastward. The South Korean art scene proved to be a vibrant and distinctive alternative, with both art fairs and the biennale highlighting the country’s burgeoning influence in the global contemporary art landscape.
