KOTTAYAM — Devotees visiting the Kumaranallur Devi Temple are currently witnessing a remarkable restoration effort as experts work to revive the faded murals adorning the temple’s outer walls. The intricate murals, which are divided into 14 sections known as Chithrakandas, predominantly illustrate scenes from the epic narratives of the Ramayana and Mahabharata.
The murals have suffered from darkening and fading over time. To address this, the temple authorities have enlisted the expertise of Gopi Chavayur, a renowned mural artist, to restore the artworks to their former splendor. The restoration is anticipated to be completed by October.
Arun Vasudev, assistant manager of Kumaranallur Ooranma, the trust responsible for the temple’s management, explained that the murals are painted on a natural surface composed of lime, sand, and Cissus repens. The series of murals begins on the right side of the temple, featuring an image of Karthyayani Devi, the temple’s main deity. The Kumaranallur Devi Temple is believed to have been established in the 10th century, during the reign of King Cheraman Perumal.
