An 18th-century pastel portrait of St. John the Evangelist, one of two religious artworks owned by George Washington, is set to be auctioned by Alexandria’s Potomack Company.
Washington’s religious beliefs remain somewhat enigmatic, but one theory suggests that his ownership of this painting relates to its subject being one of the “Holy Saints John,” revered by American Freemasons, of which he was a member. The painting was prominently displayed in the “New Room” at Mount Vernon, a space Washington frequently redecorated. After his passing, the estate included this artwork along with a pendant portrait of the Virgin Mary.
