Royal College of Art Graduate Li Hei Di Joins Pace Gallery

Emerging Chinese painter Li Hei Di has officially joined Pace Gallery, a prominent global art institution. The gallery will represent her alongside Michael Kohn Gallery in Los Angeles and Pippy Houldsworth Gallery in London.

Li is set to unveil a new painting at Art Basel Miami Beach this December and will hold her first solo exhibition with Pace in Hong Kong next year. Her work is characterized by a captivating blend of recognizable forms, such as limbs and torsos, and abstract shapes. The vibrant colors in her canvases oscillate between figurative and abstract, opaque and transparent, creating a unique ambiguity that is central to her artistic vision.

“The erotic ambiguity of my paintings feels like I’m capturing a ghost of something not quite abstract, but not quite figurative either,” Li stated in a 2023 interview with Ocula. She noted that friends often interpret her works as sexually suggestive, despite her intent to avoid explicit themes. “Some people see only a pretty landscape painting, which I find really amusing,” she added.

At just 27 years old, Li joins a wave of young talents gaining recognition in the art world. Recently, David Zwirner announced the representation of 26-year-old Sasha Gordon, and upcoming solo shows for young artists George Ruoy (30) and Heemin Chung (37) are set to debut during Frieze in London this October.
