GREENWICH, Conn. — Under a sunny sky, master artist Andrew Lattimore led a successful plein air painting workshop at Greenwich Point Park this past weekend. Artists set up their easels to capture the scenic views overlooking Long Island Sound, benefiting from Lattimore’s expertise.
Plein air painting, which emphasizes creating art outdoors rather than in a studio, has roots that extend back centuries but gained prominence through the French Impressionists. According to the Artists Network, this movement was driven by the desire to depict light and its changing qualities. The development of portable paint tubes and box easels enabled artists to paint “en plein air,” allowing for a direct engagement with the landscape. Following Lattimore’s demonstration, participants received personalized feedback as they worked on their own pieces.
