A painting purchased at a barn sale for just $50 has been identified as an original work by renowned Canadian artist Emily Carr. The piece, expected to fetch nearly $150,000, will go up for auction next month.
The discovery was made by New York art dealer Allen Treibitz, who stumbled upon the artwork at a summer sale in the Hamptons earlier this year. Treibitz, recognizing its potential, was drawn to the painting’s distinct style.
“You could just tell that the painting had something special about it,” Treibitz shared with Global News reporters Amy Judd and Emily Lazatin. “It had a unique look, and it was definitely very interesting.”
Emily Carr, a celebrated Post-Impressionist artist from Canada, is best known for her captivating landscapes and incorporation of Indigenous motifs, particularly those from First Nations groups. Her works hold a significant place in Canadian art history, and this unexpected find is expected to spark considerable interest among collectors.
The painting’s journey from an unassuming barn sale to an auction spotlight is a remarkable example of how valuable art can emerge in the most unlikely places.
