The Dowd Gallery is set to showcase a unique artistic collaboration spanning 35 years between American sculptor Allen Mooney and the late British painter Paul Chambers. Their exhibition, titled Timestamps, opens on Monday, October 21, and will run until Friday, December 13.
Mooney, a native of Los Angeles with Mexican and Irish roots, began his artistic journey as a formalist sculptor. He later became an emeritus professor of art and art history at SUNY Cortland. In contrast, Chambers, who was born in 1951 in Lincolnshire, England, developed into an abstract political landscape painter. He pursued his career in Trumansburg, New York, until his passing in 2012.
“What might seem an unlikely pairing at first glance turned into a lifelong artistic friendship that significantly influenced both artists,” said Wylie Schwartz, assistant professor of art and art history at SUNY Cortland and a close friend and mentee of Chambers.
Schwartz, along with Scott Oldfield, the interim director of Dowd Gallery, is curating the upcoming exhibition, which will display a variety of works, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, and collected objects from the two artists.
An opening reception for Timestamps will take place at the Dowd Fine Arts Center gallery at 5 p.m. on Thursday, October 24. The event is free and open to the public, with refreshments provided. All exhibition-related events will also be free of charge.
