Christie’s has announced it will auction Ed Ruscha’s 1964 painting, “Standard Station, Ten-Cent Western Being Torn in Half,” during its 20th-century evening sale in New York on November 19.
The piece, owned by Texas billionaire Sid Bass, is one of the few large-scale versions of Ruscha’s iconic gas station motif and is estimated to fetch around $50 million. While Christie’s did not explicitly name Bass, he has been acknowledged in previous museum loans as the work’s owner. The auction aims to invigorate the current art market as it faces challenges.
