Sotheby’s is set to make history this month with the auction of a unique artwork created by Ai-Da, a humanoid robot. The piece, titled God of AI, is a striking portrait of the esteemed mathematician and computer scientist Alan Turing, and it is expected to fetch an impressive $180,000 (approximately Rs 1.5 crore) at the auction.
Ai-Da, standing over 7 feet tall, is equipped with hydraulically-driven hands and cameras that serve as eyes, enabling her to paint autonomously. This portrait honors Turing’s significant contributions to computing and artificial intelligence, and it is just one of many artworks produced by Ai-Da.
Developed in 2019 by Engineered Arts in collaboration with the University of Oxford, Ai-Da is the creation of British gallery owner Aidan Meller. Despite her human-like appearance—with a stylish bob, realistic facial features, and robotic arms—Ai-Da is unable to walk and remains unconscious. Nevertheless, she has made a notable impact in artistic and cultural circles, with her work exhibited in prestigious venues, including the United Nations.
