A reproduction of Rudy Wendelin’s 1979 painting, “Smokey’s Fan Mail,” is featured among 19 historic paintings of Smokey Bear at the Ottawa National Forest Visitor Center in Watersmeet.
IRONWOOD — The U.S. Forest Service’s Ottawa National Forest is one of just 14 national forests and grasslands in the country showcasing these significant artworks by artist Rudolph “Rudy” Wendelin. The collection will be on display at the visitor center until October 25, available for viewing Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with extended hours until 7 p.m. on October 18 and 24.
Located at E23979 US 2 in Watersmeet, the center is hosting these reproduction paintings, which were created between 1977 and 1995 and loaned by the USDA National Agricultural Library. Wendelin, who began illustrating for the Forest Service in 1933, is credited with shaping Smokey Bear’s human-like appearance, complete with his signature ranger hat and blue jeans.
Thanks to Wendelin’s artistry, Smokey Bear’s enduring message, “Only you can prevent wildfires,” has resonated with generations. This exhibition marks the 12th stop on a national painting tour and is part of Smokey Bear’s year-long 80th birthday celebration.
The public is encouraged to view the paintings and enjoy a fall walk along the nature interpretive trail, which highlights the true story behind Smokey Bear’s iconic campaign.
