Hanoi – Renowned Vietnamese artist Lý Trực Sơn is presenting a groundbreaking collection of works in his latest exhibition, “Earth,” which highlights his innovative use of natural materials such as soil and stone. The exhibition features nearly 50 paintings, including 15 large-scale works measuring 4.2 meters by 2.1 meters, all created over the past three years.
The artist’s primary medium for these paintings comes from hills and mountains across Vietnam. Sơn processes these natural materials by crushing them, mixing them with glue, and applying the mixture onto canvases, giving his work a raw, earthy quality that mirrors the landscapes they originate from.
Curator Dong Tongling emphasized the significance of this shift in Sơn’s artistic approach. “Earth represents a profound fusion of materials, space, time, creative language, way of thinking, and artistic spirit,” he explained. This new direction marks a departure from Sơn’s previous use of lacquerware and Du paper, which had accompanied him throughout his years of artistic exploration abroad.
Tongling further noted that the exhibition reflects Sơn’s deep engagement with abstract techniques and multi-layered cultural interpretations. “Rather than interpreting or explaining the works, Earth invites viewers to immerse themselves in a trance-like state, contemplating the mysterious charm that emanates from both the artist’s subconscious and the tangible physicality of the natural materials he has so meticulously refined,” Tongling said.
The exhibition offers a unique and immersive experience for art lovers, blending nature, abstraction, and cultural reflection through Lý Trực Sơn’s visionary lens.
