Māori Elder Painting Anticipated to Achieve $3 Million at Auction

A painting by renowned New Zealand artist Charles Frederick Goldie, titled Thoughts of a Tohunga, is projected to sell for $3 million at auction next month, potentially setting a new record for the most expensive painting in New Zealand’s history.

Created in 1938, Thoughts of a Tohunga is notable for its portrayal of Whakekauri Tahuna, a member of the Tūhoe tribe, who is recognized as the last of his generation to receive traditional tattooing. The auction is scheduled for November 26 at the International Arts Centre in Parnell, Auckland.

This anticipated sale follows the recent record-breaking sale of Colin McCahon’s Is there anything to say Look, is this new?, which fetched $2.45 million in September. Richard Thomson, director of the International Arts Centre, emphasized that Thoughts of a Tohunga represents one of Goldie’s most significant works, underscoring its cultural and artistic value.
