The recent auction at the Adam Country House Collection showcased impressive sales, with several 19th-century paintings exceeding their estimated values. Notably, A Red Ibis Standing in a Tree-Shaded Brook, created by an unknown artist, was the standout piece of the day, fetching €11,000—well above its high estimate of €800.
Several other works also surpassed expectations. A portrait of Queen Mary by Sir Godfrey Kneller (1646-1723) was estimated to sell for €8,000 to €12,000 but ultimately achieved €22,000. Kneller, a German-born artist who relocated to England around 1676, became a prominent court and society painter, eventually being appointed chief painter to King William and Queen Mary in 1688.
Another highlight of the auction was a portrait of Sir Francis Wyndham, 1st Baron Trent, by John Michael Wright (1617-1694), which was estimated at €20,000 to €30,000 but sold for an impressive €73,000.
